Elm Grove
A diverse, densely populated commercial street at the northern edge of Southsea, serving everyday needs for a large local population.
Elm Grove is a busy commercial street that runs north-east from its junction with Albert Road, connecting Southsea to the Fratton and Milton areas. It has a working, everyday character that contrasts with the more curated feel of Albert Road and Palmerston Road. The shops here are largely functional: convenience stores, launderettes, takeaways, barbers, phone repair shops, and discount retailers, alongside a few cafes and independent businesses. The street serves a large local population living in the surrounding grid of terraced houses. Elm Grove and its side streets are among the most densely populated parts of Portsmouth, with most of the Victorian terraces converted into flats and bedsits. The area has a diverse, multicultural feel, reflected in the range of food shops and restaurants along the road. A significant student population from the University of Portsmouth also lives in the streets around Elm Grove. The street sits at the boundary between Southsea and the rest of Portsmouth, and locals sometimes debate whether it counts as properly Southsea at all. Regardless of the label, it is a well-connected and practical place to live, within walking distance of the seafront, Albert Road, and the main transport links at Fratton. Community organisations and residents' groups have worked to improve the streetscape in recent years, with new planting and occasional events.
