Portsmouth's Seafront Quarter

Highland Road Area

An affordable, densely terraced residential area popular with students and young professionals, close to both Albert Road and Fratton station.

Highland Road runs north from Albert Road up towards Fratton, forming one of the main arterial routes through Southsea's residential hinterland. The road itself has a parade of local shops, takeaways, a post office, and a few pubs, serving the dense grid of Victorian terraced streets that surround it. This is one of the more affordable parts of Southsea, popular with students from the University of Portsmouth and young professionals. The terraces are typical of late Victorian speculative development: two-storey, bay-fronted houses in yellow or red brick, most now divided into flats or shared houses. The streets running off Highland Road, including Jessie Road, Campbell Road, Telephone Road, and Fawcett Road, have a similar character. Despite the student population, the area retains a settled residential feel, with families and long-term residents alongside the transient renters. Highland Road Cemetery, a large Victorian burial ground, lies just to the north and provides an unexpected green space in an otherwise densely built-up area. The area benefits from its central position: Albert Road's shops and bars are a short walk south, Fratton railway station is ten minutes north on foot, and the seafront is about fifteen minutes away. Property prices here are among the lowest in Southsea, making it a common entry point for first-time buyers in the city.
