Palmerston Road Precinct
Southsea's main pedestrianised shopping street with a mix of chain and independent retailers and a lively restaurant scene at its northern end.
Palmerston Road is Southsea's main shopping street, running south from the junction with Osborne Road down to the seafront. The lower section is pedestrianised, creating a precinct with benches, planters, and space for market stalls. The street has a mix of chain shops, independent retailers, cafes, and restaurants, and serves as the commercial centre of Southsea. On Saturdays a small market sets up in the precinct. Palmerston Road has been Southsea's primary retail address since the Victorian era, when the suburb was developed as a fashionable seaside resort. Several of the buildings along the road date from this period, with ornate facades above the modern shopfronts. The top end of Palmerston Road, near Osborne Road, has a cluster of restaurants, wine bars, and delicatessens that give it a more upmarket feel than Albert Road. Osborne Road itself branches off to the west and has become a notable dining street in its own right, with Turkish, Italian, Indian, and Thai restaurants side by side. The precinct area also includes Marmion Road, which runs parallel and has its own collection of independent shops and takeaways. Palmerston Road connects Southsea's residential streets to the seafront and common, so it is busy with foot traffic throughout the day. The Christmas lights switch-on and summer street events draw large crowds.
