Live Music in Southsea
Gigs, venues, and the local music scene
Southsea has a strong live music scene, anchored by the Wedgewood Rooms on Albert Road and supported by a network of pubs, bars, and smaller venues that host regular gigs. The Wedgewood Rooms is one of the most respected small venues on the south coast, with a main room holding around 450 people. Nationally touring bands in rock, indie, punk, electronic, and hip hop play here regularly, and many artists who go on to fill much larger venues have appeared at the Wedgewood Rooms on the way up. The attached Edge of the Wedge bar serves as a smaller performance space for local and emerging acts.
Beyond the Wedgewood Rooms, several Albert Road pubs host live music on weekends, ranging from acoustic solo performers to full bands. Some specialise in particular genres: blues, jazz, folk, or open mic nights. The Kings Theatre occasionally hosts live music events, including tribute acts and touring singer-songwriters.
Southsea has a productive local music scene, with bands and artists based in the area playing regularly at local venues and releasing music. The affordable housing and creative atmosphere of the Albert Road area have historically attracted musicians, and the density of venues provides regular performance opportunities.
Victorious Festival, held on Southsea Common each August bank holiday, brings nationally known headliners to the area, but the year-round pub and venue scene is the backbone of Southsea's musical identity. The combination of the Wedgewood Rooms, the Kings Theatre, and the network of pub venues gives Southsea a live music offering out of proportion to its size.
