Palmerston Road Shopping

Southsea's main retail street and precinct

Palmerston Road is Southsea's primary shopping street, with a pedestrianised lower section that creates a precinct with benches, planters, and space for market stalls. The street has served as the area's main retail address since the Victorian era, and the mix of shops reflects its broad, everyday role.

The current tenant mix includes a combination of chain retailers, independent shops, cafes, and service businesses. High street names sit alongside local independents, charity shops, and specialist retailers. The upper end of Palmerston Road, near the junction with Osborne Road, has a more upmarket feel, with restaurants, wine bars, and delicatessens.

A small market operates in the precinct on Saturdays, selling fresh produce, baked goods, street food, and artisan products. The market adds life to the precinct and draws additional visitors on weekends.

Palmerston Road has faced the same pressures as high streets across Britain, with vacancies appearing as chains have contracted and online shopping has grown. However, the street benefits from its position in a densely populated residential area with high footfall, and new businesses continue to open.

The Victorian and Edwardian buildings along the road are an asset, with ornate facades and period details above the modern shopfronts. The pedestrianised section is pleasant for a stroll, and the proximity to the seafront means that shoppers can combine a visit to the precinct with a walk on the common.
