Train Services Near Southsea
Railway stations and connections
Southsea does not have its own railway station, but three stations serve the wider Portsmouth area and are accessible from Southsea on foot or by bus. Fratton station is the nearest, approximately fifteen to twenty minutes' walk from central Southsea. Portsmouth and Southsea station is slightly further north, and Portsmouth Harbour station is the terminus at the waterfront near the Historic Dockyard.
Fratton is served by South Western Railway and Southern services. Direct trains run to London Waterloo (approximately one hour and forty minutes), Brighton (approximately one hour and twenty minutes), Southampton, Chichester, and Gatwick Airport. Portsmouth and Southsea station has a similar range of services. Portsmouth Harbour offers direct services to London Waterloo and Cardiff.
The journey from Southsea to Fratton station can be made by bus (services run along the main roads) or on foot via Albert Road and the residential streets to the north. Cycling is also practical, and there is cycle parking at the stations.
Train frequency is good during the day, with services to London running roughly every thirty minutes. Evening and Sunday services are less frequent. Season tickets are available for regular commuters. The direct connection to London makes Southsea a practical base for those who commute to the capital, though the journey time is longer than from some other south coast locations.
