University of Portsmouth

The city's university and its presence in Southsea

The University of Portsmouth is a large public university with its main campus in the city centre, immediately north of Southsea. The university has a significant presence in and impact on Southsea, with thousands of students living in the area's terraced houses and flats, particularly around Highland Road, Elm Grove, Campbell Road, and Jessie Road.

The university was established in its current form in 1992, when Portsmouth Polytechnic gained university status, though its origins date back to 1869. It has approximately 25,000 students and is one of the largest employers in the city. Academic strengths include pharmacy, cosmology, creative industries, engineering, and business.

Several university buildings are located on the edges of Southsea, and the Eldon Building and other facilities are within walking distance of Albert Road. The student population contributes significantly to Southsea's economy, supporting the cafes, pubs, shops, and takeaways along the main streets. The cultural vitality of Albert Road owes something to the student presence, which helps sustain the live music venues, bars, and creative businesses.

The university's impact on housing is significant. Demand from students drives the rental market in parts of Southsea, and the conversion of family houses into shared student accommodation has changed the character of some streets. This is a source of tension in some areas, though the relationship between the university, students, and longer-term residents is generally managed constructively.

The university also provides public-facing facilities including sports centres, libraries, lectures, and exhibitions that are accessible to Southsea residents.
