Water Sports in Southsea

Sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, and more

Southsea's seafront and the surrounding waters of the Solent offer a range of water sports opportunities. The relatively sheltered waters between the mainland and the Isle of Wight provide good conditions for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Several water sports clubs and hire operators are based along the seafront and at Eastney. Kayak and paddleboard hire is available during the summer months, with guided sessions for beginners. The eastern end of the seafront, near Eastney and the entrance to Langstone Harbour, is particularly popular for wind-based sports because of the consistent breezes.

Sailing has a long tradition in the area, with clubs based around Portsmouth Harbour and Langstone Harbour. Dinghy sailing, yacht racing, and powerboating all take place in the Solent, one of the busiest and most famous sailing waters in the world.

Swimming in the sea is popular along much of the seafront, with a growing open water swimming community. Sea swimming groups meet regularly for organised dips, and the sport has grown significantly in popularity in recent years.

The Solent's tidal currents can be strong, particularly near the harbour entrances, and water sports participants should be aware of the shipping traffic that uses the main channels. Coastguard and RNLI services cover the area. The combination of accessible beaches, consistent winds, and the sheltered Solent environment makes Southsea a natural base for water sports of all levels.
