Eastney Beam Engine House

Heritage, Southsea

The Eastney Beam Engine House is a Victorian pumping station containing two James Watt beam engines, originally installed in 1887 to pump sewage from the Portsmouth system. The engines are among the best-preserved examples of their type in England and are maintained in working order by volunteers. The engine house is open to visitors on selected days throughout the year, with steam-up events when the engines are run. The site is a scheduled ancient monument and offers a fascinating glimpse into Victorian engineering. It sits in the Eastney area, near the former Royal Marines barracks.
