Rock Gardens

Park, Southsea

The Rock Gardens were created in the early 1930s on the seafront between Southsea Castle and Blue Reef Aquarium. The gardens feature winding paths through planted rockwork, a small stream, a waterfall, and ornamental pools. The planting includes subtropical and Mediterranean species that thrive in Southsea's mild maritime climate. The gardens are set below the level of the common and offer a sheltered, surprisingly secluded space despite being yards from the seafront promenade. Restored and maintained by the council and volunteer groups, the Rock Gardens are free to visit year-round and are one of Southsea's most attractive quiet spots.
