Royal Marines Museum (Former Site)

Heritage, Southsea

The Royal Marines Museum occupied the former officers' mess of the Eastney Barracks from 1958 until 2017, when its collections were moved to the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The museum told the story of the Royal Marines from their foundation in 1664 to the present day, with displays of uniforms, weapons, medals, and personal stories. The Grade II listed officers' mess building survives and is one of the finest Victorian military buildings in Eastney. The barracks site has been partly redeveloped for housing, though the listed buildings have been retained.
