Blue Reef Aquarium Opens on the Seafront

2000

Blue Reef Aquarium opened in 2000 on Southsea seafront, near the Rock Gardens and Southsea Castle. The aquarium is housed in a purpose-built building set into the seafront promenade, with its main entrance at esplanade level. Inside, the aquarium displays marine and freshwater species from around the world, with a particular focus on British coastal waters and tropical reef environments. The centrepiece is an underwater tunnel through a large tank housing sharks, rays, and tropical fish. Smaller displays include seahorses, jellyfish, otters, and a rockpool touch tank aimed at children. Blue Reef is part of a national chain of aquariums, and the Southsea branch benefits from its seafront location and proximity to the other attractions along the esplanade. The aquarium has become one of Southsea's most visited attractions, particularly popular with families during school holidays and rainy days. It runs educational programmes and conservation projects, including seahorse breeding and local marine surveys. The building sits in a prominent position on the seafront and is visible from the promenade. Together with Southsea Castle, the Rock Gardens, and the D-Day Story, the aquarium forms part of a cluster of attractions in the central section of the seafront.
