Castle Road

Castle Road runs south towards Southsea Castle and the seafront, passing through the transition zone between the commercial streets and the open common. The road has a small cluster of shops and cafes near its junction with Victoria Road South. As it approaches the common, the character becomes more residential and open, with views across the grass towards the sea. Castle Road is one of the routes laid out during Thomas Ellis Owen's original development of Southsea in the 1830s and 1840s, and some of the earlier buildings in the street date from this period.
