Palmerston Road is Southsea's main shopping street, running south from the junction with Osborne Road down towards the seafront. The lower section is pedestrianised, with benches, planters, and space for a weekly market. The street has a mix of chain retailers, independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. Palmerston Road has served as Southsea's commercial centre since the Victorian era, and several of the buildings retain ornate period facades above modern shopfronts. The upper end, near Osborne Road, has a cluster of restaurants and wine bars. The Christmas lights switch-on and summer street events draw large crowds each year.
