Cromwell Road is a long residential street in the eastern part of Southsea, running roughly parallel to the seafront between the Canoe Lake area and Eastney. The houses are predominantly Victorian and Edwardian terraces. The road connects several of Southsea's eastern neighbourhoods and carries a steady flow of traffic. Cromwell Road sits between the more expensive streets near the seafront and the denser terraces further inland. A few small shops and businesses operate along the road. The eastern end approaches the Eastney area and the former Royal Marines barracks site.
